 Lead Safe High Point

The City has established a
Community Outreach Advocacy and Education campaign called
Lead Safe High Point

Lead Safe High Point is predicated upon the following facts:

  • Lead poisoning is entirely preventable.
  • Low-income African American, Hispanic and refugee children are more likely poisoned by lead.
  • High levels of lead can cause mental retardation, seizures, coma, and kidney problems.
  • Low levels of lead can cause behavior problems, learning disabilities, and lower IQ.
  • Primary Sources of lead poisoning in High Point is from (1) leaded paint dust found in older, pre-1978 houses and in (2) the soil  of yards, playgrounds, and gardens in older neighborhoods.

Lead Safe High Point is dedicated to the development, organization and implementation of the following objectives and goals:

  • Implementation of a citywide Lead Safe High Point campaign to promote public awareness of lead poisoning prevention.
  • Provide educational outreach for families, community leaders, children service providers with comprehensive lead poisoning prevention strategies, materials, workshops and health fairs, etc.
  • Instruction of property owners, property managers, contractors, construction specialists and other workers on lead safe work practices.
  • Advocate for information and referral services on lead poisoning issues, including lead hazard reduction, blood lead screening, tenant legal rights regarding lead-safe housing.
  • Increase the effectiveness of existing health care and social service organizations.
