The Westside WWTP recently completed Phase 1 of a planned three phase Plant upgrade. Phase 1 included the construction of a completely new (PTF) Preliminary Treatment Facility. This upgrade did not affect the current design/NPDES permit limit of 6.2 MGD (million gallons per day).
One new addition to the Westside treatment process that was included in Phase 1 is Odor Control. This system is essentially a mirror image of the odor control system currently in place at the Eastside WWTP.
In January of 2010 construction began on Phase 2 of the Westside upgrade. This phase includes building two earthen berms for flood control, construction of completely new effluent sand filters, and construction of an effluent pump station.
Safety, permit compliance, and flood prevention are three of the main reasons for this upgrade. Process equipment age and wear was another reason for this upgrade. Phase 2 construction is scheduled to be completed by April 2012.
Final Westside upgrade/improvements are designed to mirror the treatment process at the Eastside WWTP. This process includes a five step BNR (Biological Nutrient Removal) process, replacing the current Activated Sludge process.
The goal of both the Eastside and Westside WWTP’s is to provide for the safety of its employees, maintain compliance with the NPDES permit limits, and protect the natural aquatic environment of the receiving stream as well as the downstream users.
