WATER

 

Who do I call about low water pressure at my house?

Call customer service (336.883.3111) and report the problem to them.  They will enter a work order and someone will be out as soon as possible to see why you have this problem.

Who do I need to talk to about a high water bill?

Call customer service and let them know you have received a high water bill.  They will enter a work order and someone will come out and check the meter to make sure it was read right and that there are no leaks to be detected.

What causes a water main break?

Cold weather, extreme heat and temperature fluctuation cause changes in the soil around pipes which results in the ground to shift which causes pressure.  The freezing and expansion of water contents may have the same overwhelming effect.  Age, pipe defects, and sometimes accidents also contribute to a water main break.

How soon can we respond to a water emergency?

The City responds within one hour or as soon as possible if on another call.

WASTEWATER

How do sewer trucks un-clog and clean sewer mains?

They use high pressure water and a series of different heads to break blockages lost in wastewater mains.  These blockages can be cause from roots, grease, and vandalism.  Grease comes from people  dumping grease down the drain instead of disposing it some other way, like in the trash.  Vandalism is when people flush things down the commode or they open a manhole and throw anything form clothes, wood, rocks old televisions and anything else they can think of.

I have a sewer spill in my yard.  What should I do?

Keep kids and animals away from the spill and call Customer Service (336.883.3111) to have the City come out and see why this is happening before you call a plumber.  It may be something the City can take care of at no cost to you.

How soon can a crew respond to my sewer emergency?

We will be there with in a hour or as soon as possible if not already on another call.

Does Water Sewer Mains work 24/7?

Yes we have emergency response teams for after hour operation /service.

How often is the sewer system cleaned?

The wastewater collection system is being cleaned all the times.  We clean different parts of the system each day.  We have a goal to clean more than ten percent (10%) of the system a year.

Who do I call about a clean out cap missing?

We help the customer maintain their sewer service from the back of the curb to the Main in the street.  Please call customer service (336.883.3111) and they will enter a work order and someone from the City will be out as soon as possible to replace.

What is a backwater (swing check) valve?

This valve is normally installed next to the customer’s house to prevent wastewater from going in the wrong direction.

How do I dispose of grease?

Do not dump grease down the drain.  Please refer to the Fats, Oil, and Grease (FOG) information located on the Industrial Pretreatment page.

How often are the outfalls mowed?

We mow outfalls throughout the year.  Our goal is to mow all the City’s outfalls once a year.

 

BACK FLOW

 

What type of back flow is required for irrigation?

A Reduce pressure zone (RPZ) is required.

What are the back flow installation requirements in High Point?

Please refer to the installation drawings.

How soon after the inspection can I expect my water meter?

We will notify the meter shop when everything is ok for meter to be set, dealing with the back flow assembly.  You will need to contact customer service (336.883.3111) and tell them you want your meter set.  They will enter a work order.  The meter shop has two (2) working days to set the meter.

Who can install a back flow preventer?

A licensed plumber or utility contractor can install the back flow assembly.

How do I get on the back flow tester list?

You must contact a back flow inspector with the City and they will tell you how to get on the list.

Do you require a open ditch for inspection?

No.

 

MISCELLANEOUS

 

Does Water Sewer Mains take care of rodents?

No.

Does Water Sewer Mains clean out storm drains?

No.  It is the responsibility of the City's Stormwater Division.
