Officers Killed in the Line of Duty
Officers killed during their course of duty at the High Point Police Department:

On September 15th, 1915 the citizens of High point were shocked to learn that Officer James Witcher was shot after responding to a disturbance call. A shot was fired which mortally wounded Officer Witcher, no one has ever been charged in the crime. Officer Witcher was the first High Point Police Officer to die in the line of duty.


On June 10th, 1925 High Point citizens again were shocked to learn that two Police Officers had been shot. Officers Carey Reeves and Fred Claywell were investigating reports of a liquor house and gambling when they were shot. Both officers died as a result of their wounds. A suspect was arrested and charged with their deaths.

On September 16th, 1928 Captain Jerome Morris made an arrest for drunkenness. The suspect made an attempt to escape and kicked Captain Morris in the stomach with his knee. The blow resulted in the death of Captain Morris several days later. Captain Morris is the highest ranking officer killed in the line of duty at the High Point Police Department.

On December 20th, 2001 at 1:40 AM, Officer Twyman was on routine patrol when a tractor trailer ran a red light and struck her patrol car at the intersection of South Centennial Street and East Russell Avenue. Officer Twyman was severely injured in the accident and died three days later on December 23rd, 2001. The driver of the truck was charged with her death.
