Hours of operation:  Monday-Thursday, 9:00am-9:00pm; Friday, 9:00am-6:00pm; Saturday, 9:00am-2:00pm.

Nathanael S. Morehead Recreation Center was built in 1974.  The center is located adjacent to MHRCthe High Point Police Department on Leonard Street.  Originally the center was named the Leonard Street Recreation Center.  The named was changed in 1992  to honor Nathanael S. Morehead.

The center features a gymnasium, activity room, game room, craft room, two shuffleboard courts, two multipurpose athletic fields, four horseshoe pits and a playground.  A variety of programs and activities are held at the center year round.

The Center is available for rental opportunities to the public when not in use for regular operational programs and activities.  You may rent the Center for reunions, birthday parties, wedding receptions, graduation parties or any type of family gathering you may have.  Call the Center to request a date and obtain rates.

Current Programs 


After School Program - Pre-K through 5th Grades
2:30-6p.m.  Fee:$125 per month
Registration Packet            
Quality programming and supervision for children. The program includes homework time, arts and crafts, field trips, guest speakers, movies, physical and educational activities. Afternoon snack and transportation will be provided. Program runs during the school year.


AHOY Exercise Program
Tuesdays & Thursdays
11a.m.-12p.m.  Enjoy exercises that include seated exercises as well as stand up aerobics. The class will include line dance exercises. Fellowship with new and old friends as well as limber up those stiff joints. This group also travels bi-monthly to enjoy shopping, food and a fun getaway.


AHOY Trip - Civil Rights Museum
February 10, 2015
10a.m.-2p.m.  Fee:$10 per person
Learn more about the central role of African Americans in U.S. history and the event that marked the turning point in the civil rights movement. Fee includes travel and admission to the museum.


America's Leaders of Tomorrow Girls Club - ages 10-17
2nd & 4th Wednesday of each month
January 13, 2015 - March 25, 2015
4-6p.m.  This program works with girls who need positive messages and guidance in their lives. Includes fun field trips, community service projects, speakers and exciting arts and crafts projects. Participants will need to bring money for field trips.


Badminton Classes - ages 18+
January 14, 2015 - March 25, 2015
12-2p.m.  Fee:$4 per class or $40 for the 11-week session
Let the birdie fly! Come out during your lunch break, work up a sweat and have fun. Instructors will be teaching the game of badminton through education, drills, skills and play.


Black History Celebration
February 21, 2015
9a.m.-6p.m.  Enjoy morning breakfast and speakers at Allen Jay Recreation Center and an afternoon youth black history quiz bowl at Morehead Recreation Center. We encourage all area families to come out for a day of celebration during Black History Month.


Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Birthday Party - ages 5-12
January 19, 2015
12-3p.m.  Fee:$3 per person
Celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King by helping us throw him a birthday party. Event will include cupcakes, activity sheets and a movie.


Easter Egg Scavenger Hunt - ages 4-8
April 11, 2015
12-3p.m.  Fee:$5 per person
If you are in search of something "Eggstravagent" to do for Easter, join us for an egg scavenger hunt. You could be the one to find the golden egg!


Senior Walkers Club
Tuesdays & Thursdays
10-11a.m.  Get fit, participate in our Walkers Club. Enjoy walking in our gym and fellowship with friends prior to our exercise class that follows.


Urban Soul Line Dance - ages 18+
6:30-8p.m.  Fee:$3 per class

Line dancing is a great option for anyone who desires to participate in a healthy lifestyle program, but may not be interested in traditional weight lifting and aerobics classes. Line dancing is choreographed, non-partner dancing with repeated sequences of steps in which people dance in one or more lines or rows, executing the steps at the same time. It's a fun, energizing and great cardio workout! Led by a certified fitness instructor.


Women's History Month Workshop Series - ages 10+

6-8p.m.  Fee:$3 to attend Zumba class
March is Women's History Month, and we are celebrating with a series of workshops that will fine tune mind, body and spirit. Workshops include self defense and gang awareness; weight loss, fitness with Zumba; finances, saving money, money planning; parenting skills for young mothers; dealing with anger and depression.


6:30-7:30p.m.  Fee:$3 per class

Are you ready to party yourself into shape? That is exactly what the Zumba program is all about. This is an exhilarating, effective, easy to follow, Latin inspired, calorie burning fitness class that is moving millions of people towards health.


Zumba Toning
6:30-7:30p.m.  Fee:$3.00 per class
Instructor: Saundra Walker

This exercise combines targeted body sculpting exercises and high energy cardio work with Latin infused Zumba moves to create calorie torching and strength training fitness. Students will use light weights to enhance rhythm and tone all of their target zones including arms, abs and thighs. Zumba Toning is a perfect way for enthusiasts to sculpt their bodies naturally while having a total blast.
