The High Point Public Library is a Foundation Center Cooperating Collection.

About the Foundation Center

The Foundation Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening the social sector by advancing knowledge about philanthropy in the U.S. and around the world. The Foundation Center was established in 1956, and is based in New York City.

Purpose & Duties

The Foundation Center gathers information about philanthropic private foundations and other grant-making organizations (such grant-making public charities, community foundations, and corporate giving programs) from many different sources, including:
  • Articles published philanthropy-oriented periodicals
  • Grant-maker websites and annual reports
  • IRS documents
This information is then made available to the through the Foundation Directory Online and its sister-products, Foundation Grants to Individuals Online and Philanthropy In/Sight.

Information Sources

  • Foundation Directory Online is the nation’s premier online funding research tool. Nonprofit organizations seeking funding can use this powerful database to search through about 108,000 grant-making organizations and 3 million recent grants.
  • Foundation Grants to Individuals Online is an online database of about 10,000 grantmaking organizations that fund students, artists, researchers, and other individual grantseekers.
  • Foundation Maps is a new interactive mapping tool for anyone interested in visualizing the impact of philanthropic activity. Use Foundation Maps to create maps that reveal patterns of giving and the funding relationships between grantmakers and grant recipients.

Note that the Foundation Center products do not cover the grant-making activities of government agencies. Information about grants from the federal government is available online through the website.

Cooperating Collection

The Foundation Center makes its database products, together with a “core collection” of books of interest to nonprofit grant-seekers, freely available to the public through a nationwide network of about 470 Cooperating Collections. Most Cooperating Collections are located at public libraries, branches of the United Way, and community foundations. The High Point Public Library is one of twelve Cooperating Collections in North Carolina.
