Central Business (CB) District Design Standards

In February, City Council identified a need for building design standards for the downtown area and asked staff to draft an ordinance for their consideration. Downtowns are economic generators for cities and it is important to protect investments that have been made in this area.  The city currently has design standards for areas just outside the CB district and in other areas of the city, but not for the CB district.

Design Standards Objectives:

  • Safeguards—that protect existing & future investments
  • User-friendly—not complicated
  • Manageable
  • Practical—take market showrooms into consideration
  • Allow design creativity—not suppress it
The design standards were drafted and made available for public review, and a public input session was held on April 18, 2017. On May 23, the Planning and Zoning Commission met and recommended the standards to City Council. City Council held a public hearing on June 5, 2017, and adopted the design standards.
