High Point Planning & Development Department


The High Point Planning & Development Department can provide information about:
  • Flood Plains
  • Land Area
  • Stream Classifications
  • Topography
  • Watersheds
The Planning and Development Department maintains or can provide a variety of information on environmental features in the city, including the following:
  • Flood Plains - Copies of flood plain maps showing the extent of flood plains on individual properties.
  • Land Area - The size of the city in square miles.
  • Stream Classification - Determination of intermittent, perennial or non-classified streams based on USGS maps and soil surveys.
  • Topography - Copies of topographic maps showing 2 ft. and 10 ft. elevation contours.
  • Watersheds - Information on the city’s various water supply watersheds, including a map of general and critical watershed areas (PDF).

The High Point Information & Technology Services Department can provide information about:
  • Aerial Photography
  • Digital Elevation Model

The GIS Division can provide the following GIS layers related to the environment, most of which are also available on the Point, the City’s interactive web application:
  • Aerial Photography (available for 1958, 1970, 1977, 1982, 1985, 1988, 1994, 1998, 2003, 2008, 2010 and 2014)
  • Digital Elevation Model
  • Flood Plains
  • Historic Districts and Buildings
  • Land Area (“shape area” in sq. ft. on the “city_limits” layer)
  • Satellite Imagery (available for 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007)

High Point Engineering Services Department


The High Point Engineering Services Department can provide information about:
  • Flood Plains
  • Topography
The Engineering Services Department can provide copies of topographic maps showing 2 ft. and 10 ft. elevation contours, as well as USGS maps, mostly available in digital format. The department is also responsible for interpretation of flood plain maps and has hard copies of the flood plain panel maps.

Guilford County Planning & Development Department


The Guilford County Planning and Development Department can provide information about:
  • Historic Districts and Buildings
The Guilford County Planning and Development Department maintains an inventory of existing historic sites and structures for the Guilford County Historic Preservation Commission.

U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service


The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service can provide information about:
  • Threatened and Endangered Species
  • Wetlands
The Fish and Wildlife Service maintains the National Wetlands Inventory, which classifies areas that are wetlands or may be wetlands. These areas are not all inclusive and only a wetlands survey can determine the extent of wetlands on a property. The FWS can also provide information on endangered and threatened species.
