What is the HPPD/HPU Youth Leadership Academy?

The High Point Police Department, in conjunction with High Point University, have conducted the Youth Leadership Academy (YLA) since 2014. It is an extensive two-week leadership course for rising 9th through 12th grade students. During the two weeks, students participate in several community service projects and listen to several prominent speakers on a variety of topics. YLA is organized by HPPD's School Resource Officers.

It is a hands-on approach to challenge the students mentally, physically and spiritually. Students are also exposed to many aspects of how our community operates. Lastly, students are able to earn service learning credit hours toward a highly-desired certificate as they complete their high school education.

How are students selected?

There is an application process and students are selected by HPPD's School Resource Officers.
