Snow & Ice Removal

During winter weather, the Street Maintenance Division is responsible for performing snow and ice removal on City maintained roads and some state maintained roads.
Snow fighting guidelines and operations are subject to change depending on the multiple variables (time of day, forecast amount, precipitation type, etc.) associated with a storm event.
Snow Plowing
  • In the event of a snow forecast, crews apply salt brine to major thoroughfares, bridges, and overpasses 24 to 48 hours in advance.
  • The salt brine helps prevent snow from sticking to the pavement and makes plowing and additional salting more effective.
  • When snow or freezing precipitation begins to accumulate, crews will spread salt on bridges and overpasses.
  • The next step will be to salt the priority 1, 2, and 3 routes.
  •  Crews will begin plowing when one or more inches of snow begins to accumulate on the roads.
  • During major storm events, the Street Maintenance Division will work around the clock in 12-hour shifts.
