HIGH POINT, NC - At approximately 2:27 p.m., on Friday, July 30th, 2021, High Point Police officers were dispatched to a serious motor vehicle accident on I-74 West, near Skeet Club Road, involving a pick-up truck and a large moving truck. The driver of the pick-up truck was pinned inside the vehicle and unresponsive. The traffic unit responded to the scene and handled the crash investigation.
Based on witness accounts and parties involved, it appears that Donald Lee Sapp, W/M, age 72, of Winston Salem, was entering I-74 Westbound from US 311 in his 1983 Ford F150 when hay bales began to fall from the bed of the pick-up truck. Sapp made an abrupt turn across the westbound lanes of I-74 and was struck by a box truck traveling west on I-74. Sapp was transported to Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem by EMS but died from the injuries sustained in the crash. No other parties involved in the crash were injured and no charges are expected. HPPD Traffic Officer K.T. Teschke is the primary investigator in this crash.
