The Need for Speed: Soap Box Derby Racing in High Point

Humans have thrilled and delighted in races of all kinds since the dawn of time. A popular outlet for this need for speed among teenage boys in the mid-20th Century was the soap box derby. High Point participated in this national phenomenon from 1951 - 1972. Take a step back to its heyday and enjoy the ride!

Pinewood Derby with High Point

Cub Scouts

Saturday, March 4, 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. 
In conjunction with “The Need for Speed: Soap Box Derby Racing in High Point” and the National Day of Unplugging, the Museum is planning a Pinewood Derby for High Point’s Cub Scouts who will be able to test out their cars before their official race on March 18. Visitors will be able to watch and cheer for the racers, learn more about High Point’s Cub Scout troops and have a chance to win their own pinewood derby car kit. This event is FREE and open to the public.

The High Point Historical Society presents: High Point’s Soap Box Derbies

Wednesday, March 15, 10 a.m.

The High Point Historical Society invites you to hear stories about the Soap Box Derby in High Point from those who raced in the 1950s and 70s. Visitors will also get the chance to check out the Museum’s latest exhibition, “The Need for Speed: Soap Box Derby Racing in High Point.” This event is FREE and open to the public.

Meet the Working Women of Early High Point

Saturday, March 18, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. 
The typical work and physical labor of women varied between the social classes. Join us as our costumed interpreters demonstrate some of the activities that Quaker, enslaved, and free early High Point women would have done. Visitors will be able to learn about early 19th century gardening, laundering, open hearth cooking, and more. All ages. FREE. Drop in.

Natural Egg Dyeing in the Historical Park

Saturday, March 25, 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Get ready for the Easter Bunny and dye eggs with common foods from nature! We’ll provide the eggs you can dip in dyes made from onion skins, blueberries, and more. FREE.  All ages welcome. Drop-in.

Let’s Craft! Dragons in Little Red Schoolhouse

Saturday. March. 25, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
What better way to chase away the cold than with some heat?! Make your own fire breathing dragon to warm you up!   Free. Drop in. All ages welcome.
