1. Why are you trimming or cutting down my trees?

Trees can disrupt the sewer system in several ways. For example, tree roots can grow into the manholes and pipes or fall across the sewer rights of way, causing a delay in making repairs or responding to sewer backups.

 To provide reliable service, The City of High Point must prune or remove trees along the sewer line easements. We will not be removing trees in yards and maintained areas unless an emergency forces us to do so.

2. Will I be notified before a mowing crew comes to cut/clear the right of way?

In maintained areas, we attempt to provide notification before vegetation maintenance work. Notification may be made via door hanger, in-person contact or a combination of these methods. A point of contact will be provided should you have questions or concerns about the upcoming vegetation work. If our attempts to notify you are unsuccessful, work will proceed without further direct notification.

3. How often does The City of High Point mow rights of way or cut trees on rights of way?

The City of High Water and Sewer Mains division has a goal of clearing rights of way every three years.   There are instances when it may be longer than three years before some rights of way are maintained.

4. Does the City of High Point Water and Sewer Mains Division use herbicides to control vegetation in rights of way?

The City of High Point Water and Sewer Mains Division does not currently use herbicides to control vegetation.

5. What is a right of way?

A right of way is a type of easement or agreement that grants a utility the right to use, access or transit a piece of property. An easement is typically granted by property owners to a utility for the purpose of constructing and maintaining water lines, sewer lines and or power lines. Before a utility line is built, the City of High Point acquires easements from property owners along the selected route.
